Holy Week

Where there is sadness, joy...

We pray for an end to self-directed violence and suicide.

Heal me O Lord and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14

[I would like to reflect,] in harmony with those taking part, on the situation of the mentally ill in the world and to call for the commitment of Ecclesial Communities to bear witness to the tender mercy of God towards them…The social context does not always accept the mentally ill with their limitations, and this is another reason difficulties are encountered in securing the human and financial resources that are needed… I hope that the culture of acceptance and sharing will grow and spread to them, thanks also to suitable laws and health-care programs which provide sufficient resources for their practical application. The training and updating of personnel who work in such a delicate sector of society is more urgent than ever. Every Christian, according to his specific duty and responsibility, is called to make his contribution so that the dignity of these brothers and sisters may be recognized, respected and promoted.
~ Pope Benedict XVI, World Day of the Sick, 8 December 2005
Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him…We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor…We are stewards, not owners of the life God has entrusted to us. [Suicide] is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies… Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
~ Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2280 – 2283

  • Do I struggle with self-destructive behavior or thoughts?  Have I shared this with a friend or family member?
  • Do I have a friend who is suffering?  How could I reach out to that person?
  • Do I rejoice daily over the gifts God has given me?  What gifts has God given me?
Dear Lord, you intimately know me and my struggles. Give me the grace to see the immense value of myself, and grant me the courage to nurture my talents and in doing so give you glory. May those who struggle to see their own worth know your comfort and love, and grant us all your peace. Amen.
